10 Beauty Secrets Every Aesthetician Knows!!!

I have been in the beauty industry for almost 20 years and along the way, I have learned a thing or two and I would love to share them. If there is a short list of things us beauty-loving girls dream of, perfect skin probably TOPS that list. I am asked the savviest beauty questions on a daily basis by the most sophisticated beauty-seekers and everyone always wants to know what us insiders know, use ourselves and recommend…so I will share and you are welcome!

The 10 Secrets

#1 Exfoliation

face exfoliation

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the KEY to overall skin smoothness. This may sound simple and like a tale as old as time but it is actually very true and one of the most important skincare steps that most of us seem to neglect. Dead skin cells build up and cause the skin to look rough or uneven, making your make up appear less than smooth looking. Clarisonic Facial cleansing brush is a great way to deep pore cleanse and exfoliate your skin. If your prefer chemical exfoliation like AHA’s and BHA’s Dr. Gross Peel Pads are a quick and easy cheat for the busy girl-on-the-go. You can never go wrong with physical exfoliates, like those that contain “Micro beads”. Please be sure you are using one with perfectly spherical beads, no nuts, shells or seeds…you may as well be using little chards of glass. I know this may sound a bit dramatic but it’s actually true. Just because a product says “natural”, that doesn’t automatically mean good. Ground up shells and things have VERY jagged edges that when rubbed onto skin actually cause microscopic tears. We LOVE SkinCeuticals Micro Scrub in our office.

#2 Strobing

Highlighting Makeup

#2 Strobing

Strobing (In the olden days we just called it, Highlighting) is the best way to “fake” symmetry and brightness. There are certain “high” points of the face that if hi lighted properly, can change the way we look with just the sweep of a pen! I wave my Glo Luxe Hilightening pen like a magic wand every morning. There are a few vital facial features that are absolute “MUSTS”!!!
The inner corners of the eyes: This makes the whites of the eyes look whiter and of course brighter…no Genius required in that.
The cupids bow: This high point of the lips appears more pillowy when you brush a bit of brightening Hi-lighter and we all look better when our lips look their most kissable.
If you are like me and have a less than perfectly straight nose, Hi-lighting down the bridge gives the illusion of symmetry. And as well all know, the human eye perceives things most symmetrical as the most beautiful….This is why babies are drawn to attractive people, they are the most symmetrical. So if ever a baby doesn’t Instantly LOVE me and coo with delight, I know I didn’t do a great job Hi-Lighting that morning!

#3 Contouring

Contouring Makeup

#3 Contouring

Contouring is equally as important as good Hi-Lighting. I’m sure you have all seen the Kim Kardashian You Tube video where she looks like a pretty little zebra during her make-up artists demo? Whilst Hi-Lighting draws attention to features we wish to stand out, we contour what facial features we wish to diminish.
If you have a fuller face or simply wish to chisel out the illusion of high cheekbones, suck your face in like you are making a fishy face and apply Matte Bronzer in this hollows from the corner of the outer mouth to the mid ear.
If you have a fuller lower chin or what we in the biz call “Submental Fullness”, contouring this area can thin it out a bit until you can book your Kybella appointment with us. Kybella is the FIRST and ONLY FDA approved non surgical and non invasive injectable treatment for this. I am having it ASAP!!! Sorry Bronzer but Kybella just kicked your beautiful bronzed butt!!!
A little bronzer along the forehead hairline goes a LONG way. If your forehead is on the larger size, this really gives the appearance of a more delicate one. I learned this trick from a make up artist for Kate Hudson whom I always thought had a tiny forehead!!! See…it was just good contouring!!!

#4 Peach Eyeliner

Peach Eyeliner

#4 Peach Eyeliner

Applying peach colored eyeliner into your water line makes eyes instantly appear brighter. This is an oldie but goodie I learned from a former model. When the whites of the eyes look whiter, eyes look significantly younger and brighter. Anyone old enough to remember the 80’s can remember this trick but in the old days, we used white eye liner. Peach is the NEW white. It is a much softer, more modern look.

#5 Purple Shampoo

Purple Shampoos

#5 Purple Shampoo

Purple tinted shampoo is a MUST if you are a wannabe blonde, have Hi-Lights, are Bronde(1/2 Brown and 1/2 Blonde or Ombré) and tend to get the dreaded “brassy” look. I once read an InStyle Magazine beauty tip to mix purple, Grape Flavored Kool Aid mix with your shampoo…however, I will advise against this due to that fact that I tried it, of course. InStyle is always right, right? Not this time…I must have left it on too long or used too much because I RUINED my beautiful blonde hair and this was WAY before purple hair was “IN”. Trust me….purple hued shampoo is soooooo much easier!!!! And your white marble bathroom will LOVE you!!! Mine is STILL Violet hued and it has actually grown on me! Hubby….not so much!

#6 Eyelash Curler

Eyelash Curling

#6 Eyelash Curler

If your eye lashes trend to be on the stick-straight-out side, curling them with a heated eyelash curler is the only way to go. I like to use a traditional curler first and then “set” the curl and it lasts all day! Curling your lashes is a tiny little beauty step that makes a BIG difference.

#7 Blister Block

Blister Block! I know this isn’t sexy, but neither is gimping around in your hot new stilettos while they rub your poor little feet raw. Anyone who has an intense love of shoes knows this pain all too well. This little silicon wonder stick buffers any friction from way too high heels or new shoes, especially patent leather heels….they BITE! This is the single most important beauty product for brides. Especially us brides who chose to wear 4 inch Kate Spade Strappy stilettos and may have forgotten to break them in…You will find this product in the “Foot Care” isle at any major drug store. Your feet will thank me for it!!!

#8 Use Primer

People ask me every single day how my make up looks so smooth and wears all day long. As a busy, working Wife and Mum to an 11 Month old, touching up my make up throughout the day or night is not really an option. I love products that do double duty so Skincare that has a built in primer is a win-win for me. From work to Spin Class to cooking dinner, I still look decent, even at 10pm when I finally get to cleanse the day away and drift off to sleep. My favorite product for this is SkinCeuticals newest anti-aging wonder, and it truly is, Metacell Renewal B3. This is a Niacinimide anti ager that fights off sun damage and early signs of aging like a super hero. It also has an amazingly smoothing primer built right in, making it a one-and-done wonder!!!!

#9 Brow Shaping

Eyebrow Shaping

#9 Brows are IN

In the 90’s thin was IN!!! Now, it is the year of the brow. BROWS are the new LASHES!!! These days with it being all about the brows we can all say a collective “Thank you” to the lovely and Browlicious Cara Delevingne!!! I am missing the days when it was all about dereairs….thanks JLo and Kim K. Then it was all about lips….thank you Angelina. I was “In” for about 5 minutes and then came brows. It has taken me several long and tireless years of using lash and brow growth serums to have fuller brows to jump VERY slowly on brow band wagon. The best tip I have for this is to apply your lash primer on clean brows and then apply your brow power or pencil. The fibers in them will adhere to your brow hairs and make them appear fuller and thicker. Now we can all give Cara’s bountiful brows a run for their money….not really but it is a fun thought.

#10 Double-Duty

Products that do double duty can save you time. Use an angled eye liner brush and dip into your Mascara wand and now you have the longest wearing cream eye liner. Bronzer does double duty as blush and a contour and your eye cream works great as an upper lip line tx. Don’t shampoo the ends of your hair, it is too drying. Only condition the mid to ends of hair to prevent weighing down the roots. In a pinch you can use moisturizer as facial cleanser, conditioner as shaving cream and store your eye cream in the fridge if you tend to get puffy. The coolness will instantly tone down bags the size of carry-on luggage!!!!
